Oat Bath for Sensitive Skin

If you feel like a soothing oat bath for itchy or sensitive skin, read on!
You'll need:
– a handful of rolled oats (not instant oats)
– a clean knee-high stocking or muslin bag

Either tie to or place under the hot water tap. When the water runs through the oats, a nice milky bath is formed. You can then use the oat bag as a soap substitute to gently rub the skin.

Dust Mite Reduction Tips

Dust mites are tiny, can’t be seen with the naked eye and love warm, damp conditions. They feed on mould, skin flakes from humans and animals, cereals and crumbs. They live in carpets, soft furnishings, lounges and clothing, but beds are their prime habitat. It’s not the actual mite that’s the problem, but a substance in it’s droppings which can cause allergic reactions.

Dust mites are impossible to remove totally, although they can be reduced significantly. Eczema, asthma and allergic rhinitis (a runny nose) often improves dramatically when allergic individuals take reduction measures.

Following are some tips for dust mite reduction:

1 Dust mites thrive inside most mattresses and pillows because of the presence of skin flakes, the heat we generate during sleep and the moisture that we expel. Encasing your pillows, matress and doona in zippered dust mite covers will substantially reduce exposure to dust mite allergen, keeping the mite droppings and allergens inside the cover and out of contact with the human body. There are also bedding products being sold which are labelled as good for allergies. The fabrics and fillings used in these products are designed to minimise dust mites and moulds. Frequently wash and change bed linen (a weekly wash is recommended). Hot wash at 55-60 degrees to help kill dust mites.

2 Dust mites prefer warm, damp conditions. The preferred living conditions of the dust mite is at temperatures between 17 degrees and 23 degrees – the normal indoor temperature range in the majority of homes, schools and offices. The highest densities of dust mites occur in the humid summer months and the lowest density in the drier winter months. Reducing humidity in the home helps reduce dust mites, but it is important to remember that if the moisture levels in the air become too low, this can also dry out the skin. Air the bedroom and living room daily to reduce humidity.

3 If your baby/child has allergies, avoid placing a mobile above their bed. Mobiles hung above a cot or bed will gather dust which may fall on your child when the mobile moves.

4 Dust mites in school classrooms can often aggravate eczema. If your child is getting itchy and restless when sitting on the carpet, supplying a rubber yoga mat to sit on can help improve concentration and reduce eczema flare ups from dusty carpets.

5 If dust mite allergy is severe, removing carpet and rugs from the home (especially the bedroom of the allergic person) and replacing with tiles or wooden floors can help. Sunshine destroys dust mites, so where rugs can’t be avoided, hang them out regularly in the sun to air.

6 Keep clutter in the house to a minimum. Surfaces should be kept clear of toys, books, ornaments and wiped with a damp cloth.

7 Vacuum regularly (including under the bed, mattresses and lounges). When vacuuming, HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter vacuum cleaners are best as they reduce the allergens put back into the air from the vacuum cleaner. HEPA filters remove 99.97% of particles bigger than 0.3 micrometers in diameter and even a higher percentage of larger particles. HEPA filters are also used in air purifiers, reducing allergens such as dust, pollen and mould from the air in homes.

8 Avoid stuffed toys unless they are certified Asthma and Allergy Friendly. Stuffed toys are a natural hiding place for dust mites and other allergens which can be a major trigger for asthma and eczema. Placing toys in a plastic bag and freezing them overnight helps kill dust mites. They should then be washed before using again.

9 Dust mites love cushions and curtains, so if possible they should be avoided. If you need to use fabric curtains, choose ones which can be washed at 55-60 degrees celsius. When choosing soft furnishings such as a lounge, it is best to choose leather or one with removable, washable covers.

10 Dust mites thrive in undisturbed environments, such as where winter clothes are stored. When unpacking clothes which have been stored away, wash them and hang out in the sunlight before wearing. (Note: If you or your child has pollen allergies, then be careful when drying washing outside, especially if it is windy as pollen can be blown over the clothing). Where possible, hot wash the clothing at 55-60 degrees. I know that when I unpack my winter clothes, I have a huge sneezing fit!

Easter Cocoa Balls

It’s that time of the year again, when chocolate is at the forefront of everyone’s minds. For those of us who can’t eat dairy (myself included), there is still a way to satisfy those chocolate cravings. These cocoa balls are healthy, delicious, and the kids can even help you make them. They will keep up to four weeks refrigerated in an air-tight container. They also make a great lunch-box snack. Have a wonderful easter!

INGREDIENTS:

2 cups of whole raw almonds (or you can cheat like me and use 2 cups of almond meal)

20 fresh Medjool dates, pitted

2 teaspoons of pure vanilla extract or seeds from 1 vanilla bean

2 tablespoons of pure cocoa powder

2 tablespoons of hulled tahini

1/2 cup of desiccated coconut (for rolling)

METHOD:

Place the almonds in a food processor until roughly ground. Add dates and vanilla, then process until combined. Add the cocoa powder and tahini, then pulse until combined. Transfer to a large bowl and kneed by hand until the mixture binds together. Roll into bite-size balls and roll in coconut.

Cleaning with vinegar – kind to you, the environment and your pocket

Did you know that common white vinegar makes a great all-purpose cleaning spray? It cuts through grease, removes odours, and is anti-bacterial. Add equal parts of water and white vinegar, then place into a spray bottle. Vinegar is an excellent cleaner for all kitchen surfaces – benches, refrigerator shelves and walls, stove tops. However, it is not to be used on marble surfaces.

For those who wish to add pure essential oils, generally citrus oils are good at degreasing (for example orange, lemon, grapefruit or lime), where herbs are good at deodorising and disinfecting (for example rosemary, thyme, sage, pine, and my favourite – eucalyptus). As pure essential oils are strong and potent, use them sparingly. It is also good to keep rooms well ventilated while cleaning. Some essential oils are not recommended during pregnancy or when terminally ill, so please check before using. And if you have sensitive skin, also use with care and wear gloves. Some essential oils can cause skin irritations. Label all of your ingredients and keep them out of reach of children.

Homemade Muesli with Flaxseeds and Lecithin

This muesli recipe is from “The Healthy Skin Diet” book. I made it on the weekend and it is delicious. My husband summed it up in one word ... “Yum!” It is full of fibre, low GI and rich in protein. It is wheat free and dairy free if using rice/soy or almond milk. It is filling, so a bowl should keep your belly satisfied throughout the morning. And best of all, it uses ingredients which are great for the skin.

Ingredients:

3 cups rolled oats (not instant)

2 tablespoons honey (I used 3 for extra sweetness)

1/2 cup almonds

1/2 cup pepitas

1/2 cup whole flaxseeds*

1/4 cup lecithin granules**

1/4 cup rice bran

Pinch of cinnamon (not in the original recipe, but good for extra flavour)

Method:

Preheat oven to 200 degrees celsius. Combine oats and honey on a baking tray, mixing well. Toast for 6 minutes in the oven, checking regularly to avoid burning. Add almonds and pepitas and cook for 2 minutes more until mixture slightly browns. Again check to avoid burning. Set aside to cool. In a bowl combine the flaxseeds, bran and lecithin granules. Add the oat mixture and stir to mix. The muesli lasts for 2 weeks in an airtight container.

* Flaxseeds are rich in omega-3, 6, and 9 essential fatty acids. Some of the main symptoms of eczema and psoriasis are inflammation and dryness, two of the main things that omega fatty acids target.

** Lecithin is a natural anti-oxidant and has many nutritional benefits. It helps the body utilize vitamins A, D, E, and K and is excellent for memory, concentration, and recall. It cleanses the liver and kidneys and helps the body absorbs nutrients. Lecithin is an effectual emulsifier that attaches oil and moisture together. While a huge proportion of skin disorders often have their roots in lack of moisture, lecithin’s capability of restoring skin’s moisture can be helpful in healing.

Eczema, the sun and swimming

Some people with eczema find the sun can help their skin, while others have a flare-up. Here are some ways to manage through the hot sunny weather.

– Avoid the sun when UV levels reach their peak (between 10am and 3pm). Try to organise outdoor activities before and after this time. If it’s not possible, keep to the shade and wear a wide-brimmed hat.

– Clothing can be used as sunscreen. Items designed specifically for sun protection usually come with an SPF rating. If you feel this clothing will make you hot and itchy (for example, if the clothing is tight, dark coloured, or the fabric or seams irritate), you may want to consider an alternative. Wearing loose fitting, light coloured cotton clothing will help keep you covered and cool.

– Sunscreen is crucial in preventing sunburn, however many people with eczema have difficulty finding one that doesn’t react with their skin. Spend time testing different sunscreens, first testing a small amount on a thicker area of skin such as the palm of your hand. If there is no reaction after 24 hours, do another test on your arm and leave it for 24 hours. Again, if there is no reaction after 24 hours, you could do a test on the face. If any redness or irritation occurs, another brand would need to be tried.

– Sunscreens can consist of chemical absorbers, physical blockers or a combination of both. Chemical absorbers penetrate the skin and allow some UVA light to pass through (but they can irritate). Physical blockers reflect the sun’s harmful rays, are less likely to irritate, but don’t rub in as well, often leaving a slight white sheen on the face and body. But having had eczema myself, this is preferable to burning! (You may wish to check out our sensitive skin sunscreen at theallergyshop.com.au)

– Saltwater can be beneficial to some people with eczema, but in others it might cause the skin to become red and inflamed. Chlorine can also irritate the skin. When swimming at an indoor pool or out of the sun, it’s important to apply a layer of emollient before going into the water to act as a barrier. This can be difficult when sunscreen needs to be applied. When sunscreen is being used, if possible, apply emollient at least half an hour before putting on sunscreen. Finding the right balance between too much and too little emollient will be necessary, especially if it is greasy or oily. You don’t want to fry! A lighter emollient may be better for the day with a heavier emollient used at night.

– A shower after swimming will help remove possible irritants.

TIPS: Reducing eczema flare-ups at school

– As itching gets worse with heat and sweat, ask if your child can sit away from sunny windows and heaters. Sitting in the coolest part of the room would be of benefit.
– If going on a school excursion with bunk beds, ensure your child sleeps on the top level as dust mites will shower on to the bed below.
– Provide your child with a container of emollient to keep with them. Put the emollient into a fun container which they like using.
– Explain to teachers that your child may need additional time around sports activities to apply emollients, either before swimming or after showering.
– Arrange for your child to leave the classroom if they are having an itching attack. They may need a quiet place to sit, calm down and apply emollient. Keeping a clean flannel in their schoolbag is a good idea as they can run it under cool water and apply it to the skin to reduce the itch.
– Some activities in art and technical classes may need to be avoided such as pottery or those using strong solvents, glues, or chemicals. Supply your child with cotton gloves they can wear to minimise exposure to these irritants.

The management of eczema at school needs to be a team effort between parents, teachers and the child. It’s a good idea to meet with a teacher to outline your child’s health issues. Most teachers will be obliging in their efforts to help.

TIP: How to remove chemical pesticides from your fruit and veges

It's often hard to afford organic produce, so washing off the chemical residues is the next best thing. It's easy and inexpensive to do. Taking a few minutes to wash your produce will help keep you and your family healthy. Wash fruit and veges just before you are ready to prepare and eat them. Washing them in advance could cause them to spoil sooner. Fill a large dish or bowl with enough cold water to cover the fruit and veges. Add around 3 tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar per four litres of water. Add your produce to the water and soak for 5-10 minutes. Gently rub the fruit and veges in the water to clean. Firmer fruits and veges such as apples, carrots and potatoes, can be scrubbed with a vegetable brush. After washing, rinse your vegetables in clean water. They are now nice and clean to eat.

Wet wrapping tip for the hot summer months

We'd like to share a tip for wet wrapping during the hot summer months. When treating eczema using Tubifast, during the day, where possible, keep a spray bottle with water handy. When the wet layer dries out, lift the dry layer and spray water on the wet layer to dampen it again. The wet layer will be cool on the skin.

The Dust Storm Aftermath

It's a fact – dust storms and allergies don't mix!

I am hoping that all the people with allergies out there are doing okay after the dust storms. I haven't fared so well, with the worst eczema and eye allergies I have had for years. I am hoping the weather forecasters are wrong when they say we may see another dust storm on Friday. I will batten down the hatches and stay indoors for sure.

Dust Storm Up The East Coast

I woke to an amazing and eerie sight this morning, as did many people. The red sky is like nothing I have seen before. I just had to go outside and take a photo!

After being outside for only a few minutes, my eyes started hurting. The dust storm covering a large part of the east coast of Australia is not good news for those of us with allergies. I will be staying indoors until it passes.

People with asthma need to take care today as prolonged exposure to dust can trigger asthma attacks and other respiratory problems. Asthmatics should stay indoors if possible with windows and doors closed and ensure they have their medication with them. If you need to go outside, the nose and mouth could be covered with a mask, scarf or damp cloth as an extra precaution.

The Allergy Shop has been an idea of ours for some time now and we are really happy to have it finally up and running. We sincerely hope that this site brings relief to people living with allergies.

The founder of The Allergy Shop, Kerrie King, has experienced first hand the challenges of having many allergies – foods, chemicals, pets, you name it! She understands how difficult this can be at times.
